An Introduction to Teach-the-World Foundation

You are reading this because you CAN ... yet over a billion people in the world cannot

The Problem

Illiteracy is one of our world’s biggest problems today ... along with peace, hunger and disease

A LARGE PART OF OUR WORLD IS FUNCTIONALLY ILLITERATE ... about a billion people are illiterate and another billion barely so

WE ARE TRAPPED IN A VICIOUS CYCLE

THE CONSEQUENCES ARE DEVASTATING … for individuals, nations and the world

  • The illiterate die young … and even their children do.
  • They make less money
  • They are likelier to go to prison ... even in developed countries.
  • Their societies have more crime, disease, poverty, lawlessness, social unrest, intolerance, upheaval ...

THERE IS A STRONG CORRELATION BETWEEN ILLITERACY AND POVERTY, POOR HEALTH, CRIME ... In almost every society in the world

Life is very tough for the illiterate ... and remains so for generations

Imagine how life would be for you ... if you were illiterate

CONVERSELY, THE BENEFITS OF EDUCATION ARE ALSO TREMENDOUS

The Challenge

While there is deep understanding of the negative impact of illiteracy and great interest in reducing it, traditional means do not offer any solutions in the short-term ...

THE PRIMARY REASON FOR ILLITERACY IS THE ABSENCE OF ADEQUATE SCHOOLS AND TEACHERS

The Opportunity

Today, FOUR great forces exist in the world, which can increase literacy dramatically ... If harnessed and mobilized effectively to combat illiteracy

THE FOUR FORCES OF CHANGE

ONLINE
LEARNING

is already being used extensively--but largely for higher learning.

TABLET TECHNOLOGY

is accepted as an outstanding educational tool, but is not accessible to the poor.

GAMIFICATION OF LEARNING

has proven to be a highly effective mechanism in countless applications.

PHILANTHROPY FUNDING

which is larger than it has ever been in human history.

Our Plan

Project Teach-the-World will aim to harness and mobilize these forces in a pragmatic, disciplined, results-focused manner ... over multiple phases.

OUR INITIAL FOCUS WILL BE ON K thru' 5 EDUCATION, FOR CHILDREN ... in areas which lack access to schools and teachers.

IN PARALLEL, WE WILL ALSO AIM TO POWER AND SUPPORT A GLOBAL MOVEMENT TO ERADICATE ILLITERACY ... using digital technology.

WE PLAN TO LAUNCH THIS INITIATIVE IN 3 MAJOR STAGES ...  as below:

(Learn more ... need link for each phase )

Early Results

A critical project within Phase 1 is a proof-of-concept (POC) intended to test if our concept works. It is being conducted since early June in a depressed area of Karachi

  • With 20+ children aged generally 5 - 7 years
  • Teaching reading and math using standard Android apps ... Footsteps to Brilliance for reading and Motion Math for math
  • Delivered on standard LG tablets
  • With no instruction, but only facilitation to ensure curriculum is followed, tablets are functioning, etc.

We are VERY excited at the results.

MORE COMING SOON...

Dear Visitor: Welcome!

Thank you for joining us on The Teach the World Foundation website.

This is a brand new website and it is still in development. Some portions
are complete while others will be added over the coming weeks.

A LARGE PART OF THE WORLD IS FUNCTIONALLY ILLITERATE ... about a billion people are illiterate and another billion barely so

This is a major loss to the world ... it is costing us $ 1 trillion in lost productivity, causing disenfranchisement, disaffection, disillusionment, dysfunction.

Literacy and crime
Even in the US, the correlation is strong. Fully 2/3 of all students who cannot read by grade 4 will end up in jail at some point

The link below tells us that even advanced economies such as the UK are no exception...

THERE IS A STRONG CORRELATION BETWEEN ILLITERACY AND POVERTY, POOR HEALTH, CRIME ... IN ALMOST EVERY SOCIETY IN THE WORLD

Even among nations, countries with higher literacy invariably have higher per capita income. There is a positive, exponential relationship between literacy rate and GDP per capita of world countries.

CONVERSELY, THE BENEFITS OF EDUCATION ARE ALSO TREMENDOUS

Taking only GDP as one factor, an increase of 1% point in global literacy would increase world GDP disproportionately, by billions of dollars. The opportunity is significantly larger and amplified further when the social benefits of education are also taken into account.

ONLINE LEARNING

ONLINE LEARNING ... is already being used extensively--but largely for higher learning. It has even greater potential for the lowest levels

  • 97% of all universities in the developed world are using online learning; some are exclusively online

  • Online learning is increasingly mainstream in developed economies … GREAT (!!!) link to a concise AND comprehensive view of the online education world below ...
